How it all began
The best raw materials, exclusive designs and knowledge passed down generations.
That is how it all began.
During 1921, University lecturer Dr. Álvaro Machado, his brother-in-law, Luís Eugenio D’ Oliveira Braga (in representation of the Company “Fonseca, Braga & Cia Lda”) and José Ribeiro Machado were important merchants in Porto, and decided to go into the textile industry which at that time was booming in the region of Guimarães in Northern Portugal.
This management remained during the installation of the company and the building’s construction, and in 1923 the effective management became the manager Dr. Paulo Alves in Porto’s office, and Mr. Eduardo Rodrigues Machado in the factory in Lordelo.
Their culture for high quality, along with a part of idealism and romanticism, would permanently create the values and identity of the Sampedro brand.
This legacy still remains deeply rooted in the culture of the company which began its commercial life as a manufacturer of linen fabrics, at that time mostly involved in making sheets and towels. Only later Sampedro did expand its range to products made of cotton, polyester/cotton, and terry towelling.
Sampedro was the first company in Portugal to produce checked, striped and printed fabrics. Ever since that time the product, which quickly became a great business and sales success, has brought to the brand, together with other product lines, the recognition that remains to this day.
After 100 years of existence and 4 generations later, Sampedro’s bed linen continues to be its strongest brand image and its most iconic product.
At this moment, using the most advanced textile technology, carefully selected raw materials, and supported by a team of experts, Sampedro is involved in the entire production process from design and development, weaving preparation, weaving, bleaching, dyeing and printing, to finishing, sewing and packaging.
Today, Sampedro is a benchmark in textile production at national level and is recognised as a trusted brand in the international markets it exports to.

the idea was born
Professor Álvaro Machado, acclaimed Principal Lecturer at the University of Porto, was the main figure in the development of Sampedro’s business project. The Professor then brought two prominent merchants from the city of Porto to be his associates: Luis Eugenio Braga, his brother-in-law (representing the company “Fonseca, Braga & Cia Lda.”), and José Ribeiro Machado.

01 Abr, 1962Cheias do Rio Vizela, prvocando a inundação total da tecelagem junto ao Rio. A década de 60 foi pautada por grandes investimentos.

Década de 70Novos empréstimos pedidos à CGD. Continuação do apetrechamento e reapetrechamento da fábrica.

1973/1974Crise do petróleo. Desaceleração da economia mundial.

Abr, 1974Aquisição de 53.000 m2 de terreno e exploração de águas.

1980/1990Verifica-se a iminente necessidade de investir em todas as secções da empresa. Aposta-se assim, na aquisição de nova maquinaria e concentram-se investimentos na inovação da área de tecelagem. Instalação de teares Sulzer de projétil. Adquirem-se ainda várias máquinas todas elas com largura não inferior a 320 cm.

Década de 90Continuação da renovação da tecelagem. Tecnologia de projétil. Investimento em máquinas em descontinuo. Novos edifícios para a revista em acabado, armazém de expedição, confeção e novo laboratório de controlo da qualidade. Renovação de secções auxiliares.

Preparação à tecelagem, nova urdideira de cargas, gaseadeira, foulard de tingimento, jets e máquina de lavar, râmola de 8 campos e tambler. Investimento numa lavandaria industrial.

2010/2020Todos os teares Sulzer de projétil foram substituídos pela tecnologia de fita flexível da Itema. Nova urdideira seccional, engomadeira, máquina de estampar digital. Máquinas jaquard substituídas por novas máquinas da marca Staubli. Parque fotovoltaico e recuperações energéticas e industriais. Reabilitação de cerca de 12.000 m2 de edifícios antigos e construção de 3.000 m2 de novos edifícios. Melhoramentos nas captações de água. Ampliação e novos edifícios. Aquisição de terrenos.

What we do
Using the most advanced textile technology, carefully selected raw materials, and supported by a team of experts, Sampedro is involved in the entire production process from design and development, weaving preparation, weaving, bleaching, dyeing and printing, to finishing, sewing and packaging.
Our company produces all kinds of plain items, Jacquard and Dobby weaves, in different colours, white and yarn dyed. The manufacturing range includes all kinds of single and twisted yarns, in all weights per square metre and in various compositions.
Among other things, the company develops specialised products in:
